ArtLab Studio
Ethos: It is in the studio and the labortory where all great ideas are born and brought into fruition. ArtLab Studio brings together these two spaces creating a space for experiment and ‘play’. A space in which to fail, and then fail again but as importantly learn from the failure and fail less. It is a space where ‘process’ is of paramount and understanding its aim.
Read MoreArtLab studio has been a ten year project of mine to rethink the physical space of the art studio. Behind all that is created in this studio in this last decade is an ethos that the space must be more than just a space to produce art. It must be more like a laboratory, a place purposeful thinking and experimental play, it must have process as a priority. It must understand material as well as immaterial, be sympathetic to technology and yet understand technology is only a ‘tool’. ArtLab Studio must have the capabilities to allow for creativity in all aspects of art and design. For this to be achieved the artist witin this space must become more rounded, be multiskilled or at the very least have access to multiskills and have greater capabilities than before. The artist must think above and beyond aswell as from within and rethink. Design I beleive is now just as important to the fine artist and sculpture because making not only should ask questions but should also have capabilities to affect, it must create intellectual and physically change, have purpose. It must go beyond the concept and have the ability to explore and rewrite the old narratives, develop the existing narrative, find new narrative and to tell them within a new language.
The arts and sciences were born as one, only to grow apart and become more distant from one another by the 19th century.. Although initially this diversity was healthy, they soon became polarised and disconnected. Now is the time for Art to come closer to the sciences as indeed science needs to come closer to the arts because new worlds will need to be ‘designed’ if a new direction in human life is to be achieved.
